Recently, electric and hybrid cars have gained increasing popularity in the automotive industry. Both have become attractive choices for consumers and represent technological innovations offered by Hyundai Motor Indonesia. The goal of both technologies is similar: to reduce fuel consumption and protect the environment for the future.

It's important to understand the differences between electric and hybrid cars to avoid making the wrong choice, as well as Hyundai's solutions for providing a comfortable driving experience. What are the differences?

Differences Between Electric and Hybrid Cars

What is an Electric Car?

An electric car, also known as an electric vehicle (EV), has been around since 1828. This type of car is powered entirely by electric energy stored in batteries and uses an electric motor as its primary drive. Therefore, it does not have an internal combustion engine and is free from exhaust emissions.

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Electric Cars?

Advantages:

  • Environmentally Friendly:  Free from exhaust emissions, helping to maintain air quality.
  • Low Operating Costs: Using electricity is much cheaper compared to fuel.
  • Optimal Acceleration: Electric motors provide instant torque, allowing for quicker acceleration.

Disadvantages:

  • Limited Range: Electric cars generally have a shorter range compared to conventional fuel vehicles, although battery technology is continually evolving.
  • Charging Time: Charging the battery takes longer than refueling conventional vehicles.
  • Limited Charging Infrastructure: Charging facilities are mostly available in urban areas, with rural areas having minimal access.

How to Maintain an Electric Car?

  • Regular Maintenance: It’s crucial to regularly check the vehicle’s condition to keep it in optimal shape.
  • Battery Care: Schedule battery charging based on vehicle usage; it's important to note that batteries do not need to be charged every day.

What is a Hybrid Car?

Unlike electric cars that use pure electricity, hybrid cars have a power source that comes from an engine. Hybrid vehicles utilize two types of engines: an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Both engines operate together to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

Hybrid cars combine an internal combustion engine (usually gasoline) and an electric motor. These two engines work together to improve fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Hyundai also offers the first hybrid model in Indonesia, the all-new SANTA FE.

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Hybrid Cars?

Advantages:

  • Fuel Efficiency: The combination of a gasoline engine and electric motor makes hybrid cars more fuel-efficient.
  • Environmentally Friendly: Hybrid cars produce lower emissions compared to conventional fuel vehicles.
  • No Need for External Charging: Hybrid cars recharge their batteries automatically through the gasoline engine and regenerative system.

Disadvantages:

  • Higher Initial Cost: The price of hybrid cars is generally higher than conventional vehicles.
  • Technology Complexity: The technology that combines two engines adds complexity, and modifications to the system should not be attempted without expert supervision.

How to Maintain a Hybrid Car?

Maintaining a hybrid car involves routine maintenance for the internal combustion engine like conventional cars but also requires special attention to the battery and electrical systems. However, components like brakes tend to last longer due to the regenerative system. Maintenance should be performed at workshops that understand hybrid technology to ensure optimal performance.

Hyundai’s Electric and Hybrid Car Options

Hyundai has made significant strides in developing electric cars that are not only environmentally friendly but also provide solutions for comfortable driving. Here are some recommended electric and hybrid cars from Hyundai.

1. Hyundai IONIQ 5

Hyundai IONIQ 5  is an electric model produced domestically by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia in 2022. The IONIQ 5 can travel up to 480 km, making it suitable for users who often make medium to long-distance trips without worrying about how far they can go before needing to recharge.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 supports ultra-fast charging, capable of charging the battery from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes. Hyundai provides more than 200 charging stations across Indonesia, allowing for comfortable daily activities and long-distance travel.

2. The All-New KONA Electric

The all-new KONA Electric  is Indonesia’s first EV that uses domestically produced batteries from Hyundai LG Indonesia (HLI). This car can cover distances of over 600 km, making intercity trips possible on a single charge. Hyundai offers free EV Public Charging for one year with the purchase of the all-new KONA Electric.

3. The All-New SANTA FE

The all-new SANTA FE  was recently launched on October 24, 2024, by Hyundai Motor Indonesia. This vehicle comes in both Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) variants. The all-new SANTA FE is officially available at Hyundai dealers throughout Indonesia.
