Taking on the locals in the TUCSON Hybrid.

Port Lincoln to Flinders Ranges.

Ever taken a hybrid outback?

We know what you’re thinking.

A sleek, modern family SUV like the TUCSON Hybrid might seem more at home in the city than amidst the prehistoric Flinders Ranges.

But as we discovered on the 500km trek from Port Lincoln — it thrives in both.

The road to the red planet.

Things started to change as we departed the seaside town and headed into the desert.

Asphalt roads turned into dusty dirt tracks while bustling country towns transformed into sprawling landscapes dotted with single-street villages, where the local bakery’s homemade pies vanish by midday.

Then, just as the rugged hills came into view, so did a cavalcade of camels.

Welcome to camel country.

With cruise control and climate preferences set, the cabin was the perfect spot for viewing the creatures that were once the backbone of South Australia’s early transport system.

Today, the Hyundai TUCSON Hybrid, with a fuel consumption of  5.3L/100km[F1] and a range of around 600km on a full tank, is just a bit more efficient than the 160km a day that an Arabian camel can cover.

What else is there to do in the Flinders Ranges? Well, with the TUCSON Hybrid’s 539L cargo capacity, there was ample room to carry all our gear for hikes across the jagged peaks to take in the beauty of the Flinders Ranges.

Ancient land meets modern comfort.

After a day out adventuring, the mod cons of the TUCSON Hybrid offered an escape from the harsh surroundings.

The integrated memory seats with heating became essential in providing warmth against the biting desert cold, while the wireless phone charger ensured everyone stayed connected, even out here.

Out here, passing residents and travellers greet you with a friendly wave. Take John, a local from Wudinna, who approached us and shared the rugged challenges and rewards of managing a fourth-generation crop farm “just down the road”. His stories revealed his deeply personal connection to the land, even sharing poems he’d written describing the landscapes carved over a million years ago.

But we reckon he also wanted to get a closer look at the TUCSON N Line. Its performance-inspired design, exclusive 19” alloy wheels, and bold geometric grille made an impression wherever we went—even catching the eye of some furry, humpbacked locals.

Our secret to a smarter road
trip.

We began to make our way out of the ranges, but not in a hurry. As well as slowing down on the challenging roads, we took the time to stop and explore every corner of the ranges.

That’s where the TUCSON Hybrid’s regenerative braking technology came in handy, recharging the battery to keep us going for longer.

Tune in to the next leg as we swap sand for snow with the SANTA FE.
