Outback drifting with the IONIQ 5 N.
Nullarbor to Port Lincoln.
Ever driven an EV that can do this?
You’d be forgiven for thinking electric vehicles are only for smooth roads shielded by skyscrapers. But, as we made our way out of the Nullarbor and towards Port Lincoln, it was clear the IONIQ 5 N was made for more.

Entering the South Australia road trip part of our journey, we took the IONIQ 5 N past Poochera and down the Great Australian Bight.
Through curves and rocky inclines, we hugged the coastline in search of the perfect spot to show what our first-ever high-performance EV is capable of.
With over 238 public EV charging stations in South Australia, we could’ve kept on driving just for the fun of it. Instead, in the middle of nowhere, we stumbled upon an oasis — a dusty race track at Duck Ponds near Port Lincoln. The perfect pit stop to unleash drift mode.
Tucked away on a local farmer's land, the Port Lincoln Sporting Car Club Raceway has held meetings as early as the 1930s. Today, the local dirt racing community is stronger than ever, and we felt privileged to drive on such a storied track.
No rain check needed.
In the blink of an eye, the weather shifted, turning the dry outback track to mud. But, the Eyre Peninsula’s unpredictable conditions were no match for Josh Buchan, the first-ever back-to-back TCR Australia Champion, as he pushed the IONIQ 5 N to its limits.
As rain transformed the track, Josh adapted effortlessly, with the untamed weather and rugged conditions no match for the power, precision and versatility of the IONIQ 5 N. One by one, our crew members jumped into the passenger seat for the wildest detour of their lives.
Smiles pushed to their limits.
How did Josh handle the tough conditions? He used intuitive N and Custom Modes to access customised drive settings.
When the track was dusty, Josh shifted all the drive traction to the rear to allow for some classic IONIQ 5 N drifting, but when the rain came, Josh shifted to 50/50 front-to-rear drive to speed up the reactions of the car.
RPMs turned into BPMs.
With Josh at the wheel, we tested out N Grin Boost, which ignited a heart-pounding 10-second power surge, sending us from 0-100km/h in just 3.4 seconds.
If that wasn’t enough, N e-shift gave the feeling of being in a petrol-powered race car, with N Active Sound + adding the auditory experience to match.
As the sun set, the crew shook off their wobbly legs, left the track and headed inland along a vast highway surrounded by a treeless horizon— but the adventure was far from over.
Tune in to the next leg to see us head deeper into the outback with the TUCSON Hybrid.
