INCHEON, AUGUST 6, 2024 – Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai Motor) and Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the airport’s digital transformation via future mobility innovation.

The MOU, signed by Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor, and Hag Jae Lee, President and CEO of IIAC, covers various aspects of future smart mobility. This includes:

  • Converting various vehicles in the airport to hydrogen fuel cell mobility and expanding hydrogen infrastructure
  • Introducing robotics and smart logistics automation
  • Establishing an advanced air mobility (AAM) ecosystem
  • Introducing autonomous driving mobility service

Hyundai Motor will play a leading role in implementing key future mobility technologies in Incheon international airport with over 100 million passengers annually. The collaboration will be a global testbed for Hyundai, helping it showcasing its technological capability to customers worldwide by collecting a wide range of responses.

“Hyundai Motor plans to implement various future mobility technologies such as hydrogen mobility, autonomous driving service, robotics and AAM throughout the entire airport,” said Hyundai Motor President Chang. “Through this partnership, we will expand the travel experiences of passengers and ultimately help Incheon airport to become a global hub equipped with various smart mobility technologies.”

As a gateway airport to a global IT powerhouse, IIAC is capitalizing on its role to extend its ‘digital transformation’ into the future mobility sector, evolving into a ‘global technology convergence transportation platform.’ With the completion of its latest expansion phase by year’s end, Incheon International Airport is set to become a global mega hub.

“Through this agreement, we plan to accelerate the digital transformation of Incheon International Airport by incorporating Hyundai Motor’s excellent technology and spur the establishment of a future mobility ecosystem, thereby transforming it into an airport that people want to visit, and beyond that become an airport that changes the world,” said Hag Jae Lee, President and CEO of Incheon International Airport Corporation.

Hyundai Motor and IIAC have been collaborating on various projects, including AAM and autonomous driving. They formed the ‘K-UAM One Team’ consortium in 2021, along with Korean Air Lines, KT Corp., and Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., to commercialize advanced air mobility in Korea. In addition, Hyundai Motor has also supplied 12 hydrogen fuel cell electric buses for IIAC’s airport shuttle services from 2021 to 2023, with two hydrogen charging stations currently operational near the airport’s terminals.

Going forward, Hyundai Motor and IIAC plan to accelerate existing projects and initiate new ones. They aim to adopt hydrogen energy systems across the airport, expand hydrogen refueling stations, and utilize hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks for logistics. In 2024, Hyundai Motor plans to provide 10 additional hydrogen fuel cell electric buses to IIAC.

They plan to explore the use of Boston Dynamics' robots for airport security, logistics and passenger services., The also intend to pilot autonomous shuttles at the airport, with the goal of developing autonomous personal mobility within the terminal.

Both companies will make efforts in the customer experience sector to showcase the future mobility technology to the airport passengers, creating an exciting airport experience. Genesis, Hyundai Motor’s luxury brand, has been operating an experiential vehicle exhibition zone in a departure lounge in Terminal 1 of Incheon International Airport since 2018.

IIAC is planning comprehensive measures with Hyundai Motor to advance collaborative projects. This aligns with Hyundai Motor’s vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’ and involves strategic partnerships within the mobility industry.
