Singapore, 21 February 2025 - Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS) and the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) have officially marked the handover of an IONIQ 5 electric vehicle (EV) to SIT, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding yesterday. This milestone highlights their shared commitment to education, training, and research in electric mobility, smart manufacturing, and energy storage technologies.
The first made-in-Singapore EV will serve as a practical learning tool for students and faculty, supporting applied research and coursework in electric vehicle technology and related fields. The IONIQ 5 will be integrated into SIT’s research projects and academic programmes, including undergraduate courses and Continuing Education and Training (CET). This will provide students with hands-on experience in areas such as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies, advanced diagnostics, energy storage systems, power electronics, and EV charging infrastructure development.
The partnership also includes industry attachment opportunities at HMGICS for SIT students and faculty, exchange of technical expertise, and the development of CET courses for HMGICS staff.
“At HMGICS, we believe the future of mobility is shaped not only by technology but also by the people who drive progress forward,” said Dr. Hyun Sung Park, CEO of HMGICS. “By integrating real-world applications into education, we aim to equip students and professionals with the skills needed to thrive in the evolving mobility landscape.”
“HMGICS’ gift of the IONIQ 5 will strengthen applied learning and research in sustainable mobility at SIT. This state-of-the-art EV enables more authentic learning for our students and provides a very good platform for our faculty to further innovate on sustainable mobility solutions. Together with HMGICS, we are committed to driving innovation and fostering a greener, more connected future in mobility,” said Professor Chua Kee Chaing, President, SIT.
This collaboration builds on HMGICS’ broader efforts to engage with local institutions and industry partners in supporting workforce development and knowledge-sharing. By working together, HMGICS and SIT are fostering a skilled talent pipeline to drive Singapore’s transition to sustainable mobility.
The IONIQ 5, Hyundai’s first model built on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), has earned multiple accolades, including Car of the Year titles in India and Singapore. It has also received global recognition for its design and performance, such as the iF Design Award in Germany and the Best Electric Car to Buy title from The Car Connection in the U.S.
Through initiatives like this, HMGICS continues to play a key role in advancing sustainable mobility and nurturing the next generation of industry leaders.
