The 8th Hyundai Kids Motorshow
: Children imagine the city of the future

4 minute read

When it comes to helping imagine and design solutions for a more sustainable future, what better group to ask than the future innovators, visionaries, and out-of-the-box thinkers – children? That's what we did for the 8th annual Hyundai Kids Motorshow, but this time with a new focus. Since its beginning in 2016, the Hyundai Kids Motorshow (formerly known as the Brilliant Kids Motorshow) has focused on automotive and mobility concepts. But, just like children's imaginations, there's no end to the possibilities, which is why, this year, we expanded our theme and gave them a unique task: design your vision of a future city.

Investing in future urban innovators

Being committed to progress for humanity has many facets. For us, an essential element is investing in future generations and inspiring them to use their imagination and access their potential in building a better, more sustainable tomorrow. At the center of this year's event was to imagine how future technology and green energy will reshape cities. The task came with an enormous "fun factor" for the kids, as well as the opportunity to apply their imagination and skill to important future fields like future city, mobility, and robotics.

Sensational and sustainable cities

"How do you imagine what a future city could look like"? That was the question that inspired tomorrow's engineers, designers, and passionate builders. In partnership with the South Korean Ministry of Education, Hyundai created three categories for applicants: kindergarten, lower elementary school (1st – 3rd graders), and higher elementary school (4th – 6th graders). In all, we received 14,097 entries from across the country. These were collected and reviewed by experts in various fields, including urban engineering, robotics, and art. From the total number of entries, 150 were selected and gradually reviewed. In the end, a total of six paintings were selected for The Minister of Education Award and Hyundai Motor Company CEO award.

The sheer number of entries and the range of imaginative ideas were truly inspiring and full of infinite, fascinating worlds. From cities set in nature and oceans to the sky and even outer space, every entry helped inspire us to continue to drive the future of mobility.

Six colorful and creative ideas of future cities imagined by kids for the 8th annual Hyundai Kids Motorshow.

The Minister of Education Award Winner "Living Along with Nature" by Park Jin Hyuk, Kindergarten"

"In the future, humans and nature will coexist to fight global warming and help the environment. Houses will be made from recycled waste, and people will live in the oceans with animals and fish where sea levels have risen. Various items that people need will also be made of waste."

The Minister of Education Award Winner "From Sparkling Light Bulb to Space City" by Lee Seo Yeon, 1st to 3rd Grade

"People have created space cities full of different plants. In the space city, energy is collected and stored in special containers and used for light bulbs. In this transparent, semi-domed city, there are botanic gardens, hospitals, dental clinics, animal hospitals, and restaurants in outer space."

The Minister of Education Award Winner "E-Free Floating City" by Jo Kang Hyeon, 4th to 6th Grade

"Because of depleted resources and a lack of space caused by rising sea levels, there will be a global increase in floating cities powered by the commercialized use of new and clean nuclear energy. Thanks to this, all free-floating cities can offer their citizens inexpensive power, which adds to stable prices and their quality of life. Each city consists of a "Main Island", where the tallest buildings are located, a "Green/Residential/Commercial Line" in the middle and an "Industrial Line" on the outskirts."

Hyundai Motor Company CEO Award Winner "People Living Away from the Blue Planet" by Jung Yun Ji, 1st to 3rd Grade

"In the future, there will be a time when families will be able to live in floating spaceships. The spaceship cities will have fields where you can run around with your friends, small villages, and other buildings where you can buy and sell items. I would look forward to leaving the Earth to live in a space city and go on adventures."
