Welcome to the beating heart of bitter winters.

Sub-zero temperatures. Prolonged darkness. Harsh winds. Winter in Rjukan, Norway and the surrounding regions can be tough to experience. But can a car change all that? The all-electric IONIQ 5 N takes on a challenge like never before.

An epic experiment.

IONIQ 5 N is all set to beat the winter blues with exhilarating drives in the peak of winter. Before and after each drive, our lead neuroscientist Shani Tal and her team measure the brain’s Depth of Joy, or DOJO. In February, several groups of locals from Rjukan and the surrounding regions along with our scientist will meet on a frozen river for a mission like no other.

Designed to boost joy.

IONIQ 5 N is the most powerful EV ever crafted by Hyundai, allowing maximum acceleration, increased torque and an output of up to 478 kW (650hp) – ensuring driving excitement always comes first.

Measuring the Depth of Joy.

For the first time ever, the Depth of Joy or ‘DOJO’ will be measured while driving IONIQ 5 N. With neuroscientist Shani Tal leading the experiment, DOJO will be assessed by combining different technologies. These include brain waves, skin conductance, heart rates and more. Then, this information is translated into an “excitement” visualization, that is measured before and after driving IONIQ 5 N.

The Rjukan Resident.

Alex John Zimling Holmfjord, a photographer from Rjukan shares his story of what it’s like to live in one of Europe’s darkest cities. The winter blues are part and parcel of life in Rjukan and the surrounding regions. But perhaps this year, IONIQ 5 N can change that.

I'm curious to see if I can shake off the winter blues with a drive.

Reigning champion of the FIA WRC2 World Rally Championship, Emil Lindholm shares what it’s like to drive an everyday race car. Emil explains what stands out in IONIQ 5 N, a car designed for the pleasure of driving – a key element in beating the winter blues.

Winter blues, beaten.

The results of the experiment were overwhelmingly positive. Over 75% of participants witnessed a positive emotional impact. There was an increase in driving excitement by 68%, and a significant spike in Depth of Joy by 28%.

The Science behind the Depth of Joy

The results were calculated by combining qualitative and quantitative data. This includes pre and post-driving questionnaires, and physiological metrics such as frontal lobe asymmetry, skin conductance and heart rate variation.
